Helpful Tips For Choosing A Pond Fountain
Are Fountains Good For Aerating Ponds?
Fountains are an excellent option for aerating ponds! Most oxygen transfer occurs at the air-water interface (the pond’s surface), where fountains create a very broad area of agitation. This surface movement effectively increases oxygen levels, reduces foul odors, and helps break up algae, duckweed, and mosquito breeding conditions, while also providing an attractive water feature. For deeper ponds (8 to 10 feet or more), pairing a fountain with a Diffused Aerator can be a great choice to ensure that the deepest parts of the pond are circulated as well.
Do All Pond Fountains Aerate?
Choosing the right pond fountain is important. Aerating pond fountains are designed specifically for aeration and use a propeller instead of a nozzle, allowing for higher flow rates and maximum oxygen transfer. Decorative pond fountains use nozzles to create attractive display patterns, but this reduces flow and aeration efficiency. While both types can aerate a pond, decorative fountains typically require more horsepower per surface acre to achieve the same results.
How Do I Choose The Right Horsepower?
Selecting the right fountain horsepower is important for both effective aeration and an attractive display. If your goal is decoration only, you can choose any horsepower as long as the spray pattern fits within your pond. For aeration, a good rule of thumb is to use at least 1 horsepower per surface acre. Use the sizing charts below to determine the ideal fountain size for your pond or lake, or try our Pond Fountain Sizing Calculator to quickly calculate your pond’s size, volume, and recommended fountain horsepower.

Is Installation Difficult?
Installing a pond fountain is typically a simple process, especially if a power source is already available near the pond. Most customers are able to complete the installation themselves. Setup generally involves attaching the float, securing the intake screen, and installing the nozzle if applicable. The fountain is then placed in the pond, anchored, and connected to power. For 230V–240V models, electrical connections should be completed by a qualified electrician. Most floating pond fountains are designed for quick, straightforward installation, and many customers have their fountain up and running the same day it arrives.
Is It Better To Use 115-120V or 230-240V?
115/120V pond fountains are plug-and-play units that connect to standard residential outlets, making them ideal for smaller fountains and shorter power cord runs. For larger fountains or installations requiring longer cable distances, 230/240V models are typically the better choice. These units are hardwired to a dedicated electrical panel and require a certified electrician. Higher-voltage systems help reduce voltage drop, improving performance, reducing motor strain, and extending the lifespan of your fountain. If you're unsure which voltage is best for your setup, our fountain experts can help you choose the right option.
Do Pond Fountains Require A Lot Of Maintenance?
Keeping your fountain running strong is relatively easy! Our Scott Aerator Pond Fountains are some of the lowest-maintenance pond fountains on the market, only requiring periodic cleaning. They are completely winter-safe, so you can simply leave them in the pond year round (either shut off before temperatures freeze, or let them run 24/7 to prevent ice from forming around the motor). They are also water-cooled, which eliminates the need for costly oil changes.
Other brands will need to be removed from the pond during winter and are often oil-cooled, these both increase the burden of maintenance. However, an oil change generally only needs to be performed every 2 to 3 years.
