One of the most common questions we get from our customers is, "What size fountain do I need for my pond?" The answer is, ultimately, it depends on your goals! However, there are a couple of things to consider.
Your Fountain Goals
The first question we always ask is what you're trying to achieve with a fountain. Are you looking to add a large, dramatic focal piece? Or are you purely focused on functionality and increasing water quality?
If you are looking for a decorative feature to enhance your pond or lake, then the good news is you can go with any horsepower option you'd like! As long as the spray size does not exceed the width of your pond, it's up to you to choose the horsepower needed to achieve the display size you're looking for.
If your main goal is to increase water quality, we advise using an Aerating Fountain with a horsepower specifically tailored to the size of your pond. Our sizing guidelines are as follows:
- 1/3 HP: Best for ponds 1/8 acre or less.
- 1/2 HP: Best for ponds 1/8 acre - 1/2 acre.
- 3/4 HP: Best for ponds 1/4 acre - 3/4 acre.
- 1 HP: Best for ponds 1/2 acre - 1 acre.
- 1.5 HP: Best for ponds 3/4 acre - 1.5 acres.
- 2 HP: Best for ponds 1 acre - 2 acres.
- 3 HP: Best for ponds 1 acre - 3 acres.
- 5 HP: Best for ponds 1 acre - 5 acres.
Following these guidelines will ensure that your fountain provides adequate aeration for the size of your pond!
Your Pond Depth
It is also important to keep in mind the depth of your pond. Larger horsepower options will require more water depth to operate properly. Our Kasco Marine fountains are a great option for shallow water operation, as they can function in as little as 15 to 25 inches of depth.
Most of our other fountain brands will require at least 32 inches of depth.
If your pond is too shallow for the horsepower option you need, a great solution is to simply add more units. For example: If you've determined you need a 3 HP fountain for your pond size but you only have enough depth for a 1 HP unit, you can add three 1 HP fountains to achieve the same level of aeration coverage.
In Conclusion:
Choosing the right size fountain for your pond is not as daunting as it may seem! As long as you work within the basic guidelines based on your fountain goals, you'll be satisfied with the end result!
